2026 Family Vacation Ideas: Best International Destinations

What’s Shaping International Family Travel in 2026

When families start thinking about international travel, the questions tend to come quickly. Is this trip worth the extra effort? Will it feel manageable with kids? And will everyone actually enjoy it?

What stood out as we reviewed international travel for 2026 is that many destinations are becoming easier to experience well as a family. Better transportation, clearer pacing, and experiences that don’t require rushing are lowering the barrier to entry.

Three themes keep popping up internationally in 2026.

  • Big global moments like the Winter Olympics and rare celestial events are shaping when and where people want to travel.
  • Walkable cities with a rich culture are rising to the top for families.
  • Nature-forward destinations are pairing adventure with comfort, making once-intimidating trips with kids more realistic.

Let’s take a look at the destinations.

Killarney, Ireland

Set along the famous Ring of Kerry, Killarney combines dramatic scenery of lakes, rolling hills, and national parkland with a charming town center that’s easy to explore on foot. Families can enjoy short walks, carriage rides, boat trips, and castle visits without complicated logistics.

Ireland’s welcoming culture and shared language make this an approachable first international trip.

Marbella, Spain

Marbella, Spain, also made American Express Travel’s list. Marbella balances calm Mediterranean beaches with historic old-town charm. Families can enjoy relaxed beach mornings, wander Andalusian streets in the afternoon, and linger over long dinners where kids are welcome. Days unfold naturally rather than on a strict schedule.

Papagayo Peninsula, Costa Rica

Papagayo Peninsula on the northwest coast of Costa Rica is renowned for its luxury accommodations and amenities inside a 1,400-acre natural sanctuary. Families can spot monkeys and sloths and toucans, snorkel in calm waters, and take short rainforest hikes, all while enjoying comfort and ease.

Direct flights from the US to Liberia airport make Costa Rica easy for families, and the Papagayo Peninsula is just 30 minutes away from the airport, which is a bonus in Costa Rica.

St. Julian’s, Malta

Malta is a small island country in Southern Europe in the Mediterranean Sea, 50 miles south of Sicily. American Express says the famous seaside town of St. Julian’s blends fishing-village charm with old-world history and contemporary fun. Short distances make it easy to explore ancient ruins, fortified cities, and quiet bays, turning history into something kids can truly see and experience.

You can even visit Popeye Village, the charming film set of the 1980 movie starring Robin Williams.

Oulu, Finland

Oulu and Finland are on everyone’s lists this year. Forests, lakes, the midnight sun, Northern Lights, reindeer encounters, and Santa Claus lore combine with Oulu’s 2026 European Capital of Culture events to create a destination that feels magical and meaningful for families.

Hamburg, Germany

Travel & Leisure has Hamburg, Germany, on their list. The city in northern Germany blends maritime heritage with modern creativity. It’s a very walkable city, with interactive museums, harbor views, and calm public spaces, making the city engaging without overwhelming families.

Personally, it’s one of our favorite German cities, especially at Christmas time, for its amazing Christkindlmarkt (Christmas Markets).

Reykjavík, Iceland

The capital city of Iceland is a great spot for families. The August 12 solar eclipse will be fully visible from the country’s westernmost points, including Reykjavík. This compact, walkable city will also experience increased Northern Lights activity.

Reykjavík’s pools, museums, and casual food culture make it a comfortable base for exploration for a Golden Circle road trip.

Barbados

This Caribbean Island offers calm western beaches for easy swimming and a rugged Atlantic coast for dramatic scenery and outdoor adventure. New flights and upgraded ports make it more accessible than ever.

Switzerland

Travel Pulse says Europe will once again be the world’s most visited region, and Switzerland is on its 2026 list.

Panoramic train journeys, alpine villages, lakeside towns, and seamless public transportation allow families to explore at their own pace while enjoying breathtaking scenery.

Kruger National Park, South Africa

Kruger National Park appears on both Lonely Planet’s and Frommer’s 2026 lists, and it represents one of the most iconic wildlife experiences in the world. This is classic safari country. Elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, rhinos, buffalo, giraffes, hippos, and zebras all roam.

One of the most talked-about new places to stay is Kruger Shalati: The Train on the Bridge, a luxury train permanently stationed on the historic Selati Bridge above the Sabie River. The train sits exactly where early visitors stayed nearly a century ago, when overnight train stops marked the very beginning of tourism in the park.

While the train carriage suites are reserved for guests age 12 and up, families with younger children can stay in the nearby Bridge House suites, which offer the same immersive setting with more family-friendly accommodations. From there, families can experience wildlife viewing from above the river and guided safaris.

As Pauline Frommer said in our podcast episode, Kruger stands out as one of the most affordable and flexible ways for families to experience an African safari, including self-drive options and kid-friendly accommodations.

Moments & Experiences

Winter Olympics in Milan & Cortina, Italy, Feb 4-22 – Milan brings energy, improved infrastructure, and easy rail connections across Italy. Even without attending events, families feel the excitement of a global moment.

Total Solar Eclipse on August 12 – It will be visible in parts of Spain, Portugal, Iceland, and Greenland, with partial eclipses in other parts of Europe. CNN Travel says Aragon, Spain, the region between Madrid and Barcelona, will be a great place to view it
