Culture

The American flag, affectionately known as “Old Glory” or “The Stars and Stripes,” is a powerful symbol of American identity and values. Its distinctive design features 13 alternating red and white stripes representing the original colonies, and a blue field (the “union”) containing 50 white stars representing each state in the union.

The colors hold significant meaning: Red symbolizes valor and bravery, White represents purity and innocence, and Blue stands for vigilance, perseverance, and justice. These colors appear throughout American celebrations, from Fourth of July fireworks to patriotic desserts featuring red strawberries, white cream, and blueberries.

Since its adoption in 1777, the flag has evolved as the nation grew, with stars added as new states joined the Union. The current 50-star design has been in use since 1960 after Hawaii became a state. The American flag is so cherished that it has its own holiday (Flag Day, June 14th) and detailed etiquette rules for its display, handling, and retirement.
